About The School of Law

The School of Law is well-respected PhD programme locally, regionally, and internationally for its robust and influential legal, socio-legal, and criminological research.

These research centers house academic staff who use various empirical and legal research methods.
Each Centre has a postgraduate representative.

This serves as a link between the Centers and the larger postgraduate research community. The School's staff regularly contributes to highly-rated academic publications and reports.

This research is used to inform students' teaching. It is also widely available and accessible to policymakers, practitioners, and the general public. This ensures that the research has an impact on society beyond the University.

Our research and advisory work have a proven track record in influencing policy processes for government departments, public agencies, and regional, national, and international bodies.

Three research centers are the focus of our research:

  • Centre for Criminological Research (CCR).
  • Sheffield Institute for Corporate and Commercial Laws (SICCL).
  • Sheffield Centre for International and European Law (SCIEL)

School of Law PhD Scholarship

School of Law PhD Programmes Scholarship

We are pleased to announce that a School of Law-funded Ph.D. scholarship is available for full-time and part-time students. For study starting in October 2022, we welcome qualified applicants from the fields of law and criminology.
The scholarship is awarded competitively. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis.

What's included in the scholarship

The following scholarships will be funded:

  • Fees: All tuition fees must be paid at the Home rate. International students must pay the residual fee.
  • Maintenance/Stipend: Full-time students receive a £9000 per annum. Payments are made in quarterly installments for three and a quarter years.
  • Research Training Support Grant: Maximum £500 per annum for three years, with the remaining unspent funds rolling forward yearly. These funds are restricted and must have a clear connection to support the research project. The School will retain any funds that are not used after the project.

Part-time students will get the above pro-rated.

What's Included and How They're Given

These scholarships are awarded on an open basis. Applications are assessed on academic success and qualifications, experience, research background, a clear, well-articulated research proposal, the potential impact of the research, and a good match with supervisor/department/faculty expertise.

A variety of scholarships are available, including:

Hossein Farmy Scholarships

The Hossein Farmy Scholarship pays for UK tuition fees. It also provides a tax-free annual maintenance stipend at the UK Research Council rate.

China Scholarship Council

These awards for PhD students will cover tuition fees for 3.5 years. Students must submit their thesis within the timeframe. CSC will provide a grant to cover living expenses for up to four years and one return flight from China.
